Revisiting Maskne

Masks.  That word elicits a strong range of emotions resentment for being forced to wear one; judging others for not wearing one; the awkwardness of BEING judged for wearing one  … I think we can all agree that the fatigue of all this craziness is starting to wear us down!  Unfortunately, it is looking like we might need to dust off the masks some of us threw into our nightstands and wear them for a little while longer.  That is why I wanted to remind you about one evil that is associated with masks: MASKNE!

Maskne does not always equate to acne though.  It can be the aggravation of rosacea or eczema, causes hypersensitivity or just general signs of discomfort or distress on the skin.

So here is a reminder of some simple steps on how to prevent it.

1) For a while, most of us stopped wearing makeup because we were able to hide behind a mask.  Once the restrictions were lifted, many of us started back using foundations and other heavy makeup.  Do not forget that makeup under your mask can cause clogged pores.

2) Keep your face clean.  Sounds obvious but we forget that sometimes we need to wear our mask for hours.  That is a lot of bacteria, oil and dead skin trapped in a very humid environment … the perfect breeding ground for acne.  One thing I like to suggest to my clients is to use a product called Lotion Yonka Toner.  Give your skin and the inside of your mask (cloth masks only) a quick spritz.  This helps refresh your skin, removes odour trapped in your mask and eliminates bacteria both on your face and mask. (a moist mask can also be very irritating to the skin so let your skin and mask dry before putting the mask back on).   Containing the Yonka signature “Quintessence”, a blend of essential oil complex, you are bringing in a triple protection of purifying, clarifying and hydrating properties.  Here are the 5 main ingredients that will help you feel refreshed throughout the day:

  • Lavender Oil – Known for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic benefit, this soothing essential oil fights the bacteria that trigger inflammation and cause acne blemishes.

  • Rosemary Oil – This oil contains iron, calcium, and vitamin B6 which support healthy collagen levels. It also helps treat issues like wrinkles, lack of firmness, sun damage and acne.

  • Geranium Oil – With its natural anti-aging properties, geranium oil helps prevent sagging skin and wrinkles. It also speeds cell renewal which may help fade dark spots and scars.

  • Thyme Oil – Rich in manganese and vitamin K, contains antioxidants and provides both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits.

  • Cypress Oil – This oil kills bacteria to promote clean skin and helps regulate oil production reducing acne breakouts. It also prevents the visible signs of aging.

3) Wash your mask daily.  You change your underwear daily (I hope), so why not your mask?

4) Remember to let your face breathe.  Take off your mask occasionally, but when you do it is important not to rub your face.  Do not transfer the oil and dirt from hands to face!

5) Change your used mask for a clean one daily.

6) Lastly, have a consistent face cleansing routine at home.  A good front line for fighting acne is having clean and healthy skin.  If you need help formulating a skincare regime, feel free to call me and we can set up a free skin consultation.
